J.
Foord, published
by Dover in 1982, ISBN 0-486-24276-5. The 88 copyright-free drawings
of 40 plants and flowers are botanically accurate. This
book is an unabridged but slightly edited version of a book published
in 1906 by B.
T. Batsford, London, with a title of Decorative
Plant and Flower Studies for the Use of Artists, Designers, Students
& Others.

by Marion
Nichols, and first published
by Dover in 1974, ISBN 0-486-23030-9. Briggs' book is believed to
have been published circa 1900. The drawings are botanically
accurate, and are simplified for the stitcher. Laurie Woodard has
identified the

of the Redwork designs seen on Hawaiian quilts during that state's

Patricia Cummings' first Redwork project was a Redwork Bear that is now the business logo for Quilter's Muse Publications. From childhood, she has enjoyed drawing and painting, embroidery, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. For the past twenty plus years, she has focused on quiltmaking and the study of quilt history. Her favorite quilt techniques are appliqué, hand piecing and hand quilting, and Victorian style crazy quilting. In addition, she enjoys many different types of embroidery techniques including counted thread work and surface embroidery.
Patricia graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1973, with a baccalaureate degree in Spanish. She took classes in the History of Spanish Art, Spanish Architecture, and the German language, at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. That city made famous by Ernest Hemingway and his 1926 novel, "The Sun Also Rises," is well-known for its annual “Running of the Bulls,” during the Festival of San Fermín every July. Pat has taken graduate courses in Education, and also participated in a long-distance learning class "The History of Quilting" at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 2001.
Pat and Jim Cummings have collaborated on many articles for publication. Their work has been included in books and articles written by other people. A running account of all of the articles that Pat has written for The Quilter magazine is always available on the "about Pat" page of Quilter's Muse Publications, a free, educational website at: http://www.quiltersmuse.com
Patricia's son, James Gorham, is a doctoral candidate at the University of Rhode Island. He is a scholar in American Literature and an award-winning writer. In summer 2007, James was invited to present a paper at the 9th Annual F. Scott Fitzgerald Conference in London, England. His primary interest is the study of Literary Theory, with an emphasis on nineteenth century literature as it relates to material culture. He is presently teaching at URI and at the Rhode Island School of Design. He and his wife, Rebecca, live in Rhode Island where they share their antique home with their son, Patrick James, as well as two cats, Sam and Pixie, and a German Shepherd dog, Emma.

This beautiful antique pillow sham (30 1/4” x 30 1/4”) is an example of Victorian era embroidery at its finest. Horseshoes interlaced with flowers were a common motif in Victorian Redwork. The wide, hand crocheted, white and red lace on the edges give an exquisite finish to the rest of the fine workmanship on this piece.
We wish you “good luck” always, and happy embroidering!
