Redwork - Antique Examples

by Patricia Cummings

This file is being set up to show you some additional examples of Redwork, and other Outline Stitch embroideries in various colors. As quilters and embroiderers, we can never see enough visual depictions of antique stitchery, to suit us. To that end, I will be adding some items here for your enjoyment.

The first item is a Splasher from Germany. The barefooted boy below is standing on a rock and is interacting with a fish. He appears to be prepared with a basket in which to place the caught fish to take it home. In this water scene, there are a cattail plant and water lilies.

The following two pieces were found in the same (family) collection. One is in Redwork and features lovely birds rendered on a special cloth sold for embroidery in the late nineteenth century. What is shown is only a close-up view.

The second item from the Lewis collection contains an Oriental scene in various colors of thread. The towel, which has the same motif at both ends, actually looks much more charming, in person.

All of these items are antique and in our collection. We share them here for educational purposes. Please do not use the images for your own commercial gain. Thank you.
