Today's mail brought a new book I had ordered, Quilting News of Yesteryear: 1,000 Pieces and Counting. The author, Sue Reich, has retrieved newsclips from online sources and libraries. These tell the story of the marathon type quilting and contests that were prominent within the last one hundred years of quilt history. Women who pieced an extraordinary number of hexagons, diamonds, or triangles into one quilt were rewarded by having their names mentioned in short news reports, and/or by being awarded ribbons in fairs and competitions.
The book, dedicated to Sue's son, Stephen, who lost his life in Afghanistan, is a hardback book published by Schiffer Publishing. The pages of the book feature many colorful sections of quilts, and some pages show quilts in their entirety. Text is overlayed over pieced fabrics that are lightened so that the words can be read.
If you love to see pieces of old fabrics, then you will love this book. Sue has tried to keep the news accounts in line, time-wise, with the quilt pieces shown. There is more fun to come, as Sue states that this book is only the first of a series. The reader will come away with a new appreciation of quilts that have many tiny pieces.
