Clam shell charm quilt

Clam Shell Charm Quilt

This very small miniature, 10 1/4" x
10 3/4" was a way to use some small scraps that I liked to make a charm quilt. Very fun!

crazy Christmas quilt

Christmas Crazy Quilt, with Peace Dove. One day I pulled out a pile of red and green and white fabrics, ornamental decorations that would fit the theme, and came up with this Christmas wallhanging. I particularly enjoyed adding beading and other embellishments. The dove is stuffed from behind to give a three-dimensional effect.

Taste of Japan quilt

A Taste of Japan

Batik fabrics add much to this miniature wallhanging that features the Sashiko (hand) stitching patterns of Japan. You will see a different style of Sashiko in each alternate blocks. I designed this quilt along with others that illustrated topics related to Japan for a series of five  lectures I gave on the history of Japan, particularly as it relates to needlework and quilting.

Memories quilt

Memories

This quilt with its many elements took about a year to complete. There are large red morning glories on one side and blue ones on the other side, all done with imported French ribbons.

The background fabric was handpainted and while it was drying in the sun, I overlaid fern leaves which created "sun prints."

The corners are pieced butterflies, 1930s style.

The center consists of something I wrote and added to a piece of fabric with Calligraphy. The thoughts reflects the wistful state of my emotions at that time and my continuing thoughts about how short life is and how fast time moves.

Patrick Gorham with quilt made by Patricia Cummings

Patrick Gorham, as a young baby, slept peacefully under a quilt made by his grandmother, Patricia Cummings. The monkey fabrics, and bananas fabrics in bright hues were fun to sew into simple squares.

quilt for grandaughter

Quilt made for my granddaughter, Hannah Kirstene Gorham, born in July 2009. This quilt started life as a kit from the Norton House in Wilmington, VT. I saw this quilt with its adorable kitties and puppies that reminded me of 1930s motifs, and I was "sold." All I had to do with stitch in the ditch between the blocks, add two borders, a quilt binding, and a quilt label!
