REMICK MUSEUM

Virginia Taylor at the Remick Museum

Museum Interpreter, Virginia Taylor, pictured here, has begun compiling recipes for a Remick Museum cookbook, due out in summer 2008. The publications will contain traditional New England homestead recipes, and will be a culinary guide for those who pursue a self-sustained lifestyle.

Madison Historical Society

This new historic marker will be dedicated on June 14, 2008. The marker is located on the front lawn of Madison Historical Society, a gift from the New Hampshire Aviation Historical Society.

MHS 2008 Program Schedule

The Madison Historical Society offers monthly programs from May to September at the MHS building at the corner of Village Rd. (Route 113) and East Madison Rd., unless otherwise specified. Programs are free and open to the public. They all begin at 7 p.m. Donations are gratefully accepted.

MHS OPEN EXTENDED HOURS DURING OLD HOME WEEK IN CELEBRATION OF ITS 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY.

The MHS will also have historical items and books for sale at the Old Home Week Craft Fair on Saturday, August 2, 2008, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Proceeds from these events will go to the MHS Building Restoration Fund.

The annual Blueberry Fest will take place on Sunday, August 3, 2008, from
6-7 p.m.

In the book, Quilts in a Material World by Linda Eaton, a quilt called the "Old Otterbein Church Quilt" is shown on page 44. The museum is offering a pattern for this 1854 quilt.

"Curious George and the Flight from Nazi Germany"

The presenter was a frequent visitor the the Reys after they settled in Waterville Valley, having escaped the Nazi's by riding bicycles through France, during the war. Hans Rey, created of the Curious George cartoon series, crafted the first image of "George" in Europe, where it was published in 1941.

"Making the Case for Sacrifice on the American Home Front"
James J. Kimble, Seton Hall University

"During WWII, the Office of Civilian Defense mounted an ambitious home front campaign intended to get Americans to make sacrifices in support of the war effort. One of the more graphic elements of the campaign depicted dead or dying soldiers, intended as a way for those back home to keep the privations they were asked to endure in the larger context of the sacrifices that Americans were making on the frontlines."

"A Tale of Two Wars:  Parallels between the Civil War and WWII"

Mike Pride, Co-Author of My Brave Boys: To War with Colonel Cross and the Fighting Fifth; and Too Dead to Die:  A Memoir of Bataan and Beyond.
The speaker will explore the similarities between the Civil War and WWII, separated by eighty years and many miles.

"They Sawed up a Storm: Concord's Women Sawmillers"

In 1942, a group of New Hampshire women operated a sawmill on the shores of Turkey Pond, Concord to saw up what was left of the logs stored in the water since the 1938 hurricane.

"Love as Ever:"  The Wartime Correspondence of New Hampshire's Rene Gagnon.

A recently discovered cache of letters between Manchester's Rene Gagnon, one of the six Americans who raised the flag on Iwo Jima, and his sweetheart, Pauline Harnois, offer a glimpse into how their relationship evolved and deepened during the war. Gagnon's son will share personal recollections while Joshua will discuss a theatrical adaptation he is writing, based on his grandparents' correspondence.

"The Political Cartoons of WWII"

The political cartoons of WWII were intended to boost morale during the war. The illustrated discussions will draw comparisons between the political cartoons of today.

FAMIILY DAY - Sunday, July 13. Admission includes a day of special activities, gallery tours, a BBQ lunch, and two rides in vehicles from the museum's collection.
