International Embroideries and More

from the collection of Anne Copeland

File compiled by Patricia L. Cummings

In setting up this file, we are requesting answers from readers who may know more about these textiles collected in the state of California by Anne Copeland, a certified quilt appraiser and art quilt facilitator. She is a member of both the Studio Art Quilts Associates and The Fiber Arts Connection of Southern California If you have any knowledge of these pieces and from where they may hail, if it is not apparent, please contact pat@quiltersmuse.com

embroidered denim jacket front

Embroidered denim jacket, front and back

embroidered denim jacket back

Anyone could have made this, but the first thought that comes to mind is "South African" and I am not sure why. Any thoughts?

wool piece

Still life in wool threads

wool flowers

This photo shows just the central part of the design, not the borders, which were blue. The top edge had a fancy treatment for hanging. Cheerful, isn't it? Anne says that these are wool threads.

palm leaf quilt block

This design appears to be a block that is sometimes called the"Palm Leaf" design, often associated as a Bible block. Here, it looks cheerful in complementary colors of green and pink/red, for the center. The border looks as though it might be an RJR fabric, designed by Jinny Beyer, although I can't be sure. All in all, this is a cheerful little piece.

Annie's find from India

Vibrant colors and embroidery mark this design from India.

Story Cloth of unknown origin

This is a "story cloth" of unknown origin, perhaps from the "Miao" people still in China.

Overshot woven coverlet

Woven coverlet in indigo and white. Annie calls this an "overshot" coverlet. Any thoughts as to age?

woven banner from Ecuador

Woven Banner from El Ecuador.
