North Carolina Lily block

This image is a Sample Block of one that I reproduced from a quilt that was made circa 1850.  Read a charming story about this block and an antique top of this same pattern.

Traditional quilts continue to be a timeless inspiration for quilters of the 21st century. This sample quilt block was inspired by a quilt made by someone’s
“auntie” in Ohio.

North Carolina Lily quilts were made with Turkey Red fabrics, one of the earliest kinds of cloth to be colorfast and lightfast.

There are a number of variations of this pattern. The quilt's colors of Red and Green on a White background are a classic combination that was quite popular, especially among “flower” appliqué quilts of the nineteenth century.

I no longer am offering a pattern for this design. Even though I stipulated that this should be attempted by an intermediate or advanced quilter, who knows how to piece well and appliqué, I heard from a number of quilters who had trouble understanding how to piece this block, through their own inexperience. Therefore, I have withdrawn the previous pattern offer.
